Tapestry Foundation was established in 1995 by Thomas P. and Mary Carmel Borders. This family foundation was established to serve and support the communities in which it’s founding members and their families live and work. Though the family has grown, the mission is strong and the foundation remains committed to building stronger communities.

Social Emotional Learning
Tapestry continues to support district-wide implementation of SEL in the Austin Independent School District
Through our 10 year strategic partnership with other local foundations and AISD, we are helping to build a culture of SEL for over 80,000 children and the teachers who serve them.
With our funding partners, we recently supported a landscape assessment and literature review of SEL in middle and high school. This important research, executed by Choice Filled Lives Network, will help inform and improve practice.
Tapestry supports Communication Optimization and Compassion in Healthcare (COACH) at Dell Medical School to equip health care providers with practical communication strategies and tools they can implement in their daily work immediately.
Through COACH, health communication specialists provide coaching sessions to clinicians to help them navigate challenging, emotional patient conversations around the uncertainty of illness and treatment.
The Tapestry Foundation’s support is driving Dell Medical School’s expansion of online instruction and education on effective communication strategies — redefining how physicians connect with their patients and communities.

In collaboration with our funding partners, Tapestry supports the University of Texas School of Education START program, which allows the university to provide mentoring and support for first year teachers in AISD
A multiyear grant to the Waterloo Greenway will support the development and implementation of educational programming.
Grants to the Blanton Museum and The Contemporary Austin help to support educational programs and partnerships with local school districts
Tapestry is a longtime supporter of Communities in Schools, which provides mental health supports and safe spaces for children.
